Excavated town sites like Deir el-Medina, home to the workers who built royal tombs, show narrow mudbrick houses packed along shared walls. Rooms ran small toward a rear kitchen area, with flat roofs used for sleeping during hot months.

How Did Granaries and Irrigation Support the Economy?
Grain storage was infrastructure, not an afterthought. Domed mudbrick granaries, built in rows near temples and estates, held surplus wheat and barley against years when the Nile flood came in low. Temples frequently ran their own granary networks in an economy with no coined currency.
Irrigation works ran alongside that storage. Basin irrigation used earthen dikes to trap floodwater on fields until silt settled and soil was saturated, shaping where villages sat along the riverbank. Canals and shadufs, simple counterweighted lifting tools, extended water access beyond the flood zone.
