Travel Backpack Sizes That Actually Pass the Gauge: 10 Packs Checked Against 11 Airlines

Travel backpack standing beside a cabin bag sizer at a sunlit airport gate

For carry-on-only trips on strict airlines, the safest pick on size is the Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L. Its published 55 x 35 x 20 cm matches the smallest overhead limits we read on every axis.

If you walk with a load, the Osprey Farpoint 40 or Fairview 40 has a hip belt and a 7 to 16 kg load range, though it sits 0.1 in over the 9 in depth line at American, Delta and United.

Airlines publish a box size, and seven of the eleven pages we read also print a weight limit. Six of the ten cards below publish a size over at least one US limit.

We compared published specs and airline pages, all opened on 25 October 2026. We did not carry or test any of these packs. A gauge, also called a sizer, is the frame some airlines ask you to fit a bag into.

Tortuga Pro 40L. Published size 55 x 35 x 20 cm, level with the smallest limit we read. Over the $250 tier, 2.00 kg empty.

Walks best

Osprey Farpoint 40 or Fairview 40, $150 to $250 tier. Watch the 9.1 in depth; the hip belt and 7 to 16 kg load range are the draw.

Cheap and light

Cabin Zero Classic 44L, under $150, 760 g. Its 36 cm width is 1 cm over the Delta and United line.

Wide hips or long torso

Tortuga Pro 40L lists a height-adjustable harness and a hip belt sized 23 to 68 in. Check Osprey’s fit guidance on torso sizing before the Farpoint or Fairview.

16 in laptop

Nine of the ten list a 16 in sleeve or bigger. The Cotopaxi Allpa 35 stops at 15 in.

7 kg airlines

Cabin Zero leaves 6.24 kg for your things. Peak Design 45L leaves 4.95 kg.

Carry-on backpack size and weight limits by airline

Spirit is missing on purpose. It ceased all operations on 2 May 2026, per NPR and PBS,, so any guide still quoting its carry-on limit is out of date.

Two rows to read with care

Emirates prints 10 kg for Premium Economy and for flights departing Brazil; the table shows Economy. Qantas’s page also carries a Jetstar table whose rule changes on 2 February 2027, and Qantas’s own row has no change date.

Four of the eleven pages (American, Delta, United, Southwest) print no weight limit; for United that is the main baggage page, since we did not open its carry-on sub-page. The other seven do, from 7 kg to 35 lb.

The IATA baggage page gives 56 x 45 x 25 cm (22 x 18 x 10 in) as a reference size and says weight limits typically start at 5 kg (11 lb). Each airline sets its own.

The smallest value per axis across the overhead column is 55 cm high (Lufthansa, Emirates, Ryanair paid, Wizz Air), 35 cm wide (Delta, United) and 20 cm deep (Ryanair paid). That gives 55 x 35 x 20 cm, our calculation, with under-seat items excluded.

The 10 best travel backpacks compared against the gauge

The cards follow our shortlist order, with the personal-item pairing last. Bars are editor’s ratings from 0 to 100; the formulas are in the method section. Price tiers are under $150, $150 to $250 and over $250.

Cabin Zero Classic 44L

A 44 L soft pack with a suspended laptop sleeve rated up to 18 in, lockable zipper pulls (the lock is sold separately) and side compression straps. At 760 g it is the lightest pack here.

The published size is 51 x 36 x 18 cm. Delta and United print 35 cm wide, so it sits 1 cm over. Its page also lists airlines it fits, and that list still includes Spirit.

One box, two harnesses. Both measure 21.7 x 13.8 x 9.1 in (55 x 35 x 23 cm) and hold 40 L (2,441 cu in). The Farpoint weighs 1.48 kg and the Fairview 1.47 kg.

Each has a 16 in laptop sleeve, zip-away back panel, hip belt, lockable main sliders and a 7 to 16 kg load range.

The fabric is 210D/420D recycled nylon (D is denier, a yarn-thickness rating; higher means heavier yarn) with a PFAS-free water-repellent finish. Osprey’s All Mighty Guarantee covers repairs, with exclusions listed in the warranty table below.

A 44 L pack at 1.541 kg with a trolley pass-through (a sleeve that slides over a wheeled bag’s handle), tuckaway padded shoulder straps and a 16 in rear-access laptop pocket, in NanoTough 630D nylon.

The page says it “Meets most domestic carry-on requirements (always check with your airline)”.

The published size is 21.3 x 16.5 x 12.6 in (54 x 42 x 32 cm). That looks like a publishing error to us, but we could not confirm the true figure, so read it as a hard-gauge caution.

The page says padded shoulder and waist straps stow under magnetic flaps, and a sternum strap stows too.

The standard size is 22 x 13 x 9.5 in (56 x 33 x 24 cm) and the expanded size 22 x 13 x 11 in (56 x 33 x 29 cm). At 2.05 kg it is the heaviest of the ten.

A 35 L lay-flat clamshell at 4.12 lb (1.87 kg) with a padded 16 in laptop pocket and lockable zippers. The hip belt is a separate add-on, not in the box.

Aer’s page says this pack is discontinued and will not be restocked, and points to a newer Travel Pack 4 35L. We did not read the Travel Pack 4 specs, so this card is a spec comparison of the older model, not a buying pick.

The page also contradicts itself: depth is given as 9 in and as 21.5 cm, and 9 in is 22.9 cm.

It has a height-adjustable harness, an included hip belt listed at 23 to 68 in and a 16 in laptop slot, in ECOPAK EPX200 sailcloth.

Tortuga says up to 80% of the weight transfers to the hips. Its table lists fit for American, Delta, United, Frontier, Lufthansa and Ryanair (55 x 40 x 20 cm), a maker’s claim. The old “Travel Backpack 40L” link now shows “Pro Backpack 40L”.

Soft packs can squash, so an over-by-0.1 in pack may pass when it is not stuffed. The published figure is the one you can check against a limit before you fly.

The expanded size is the one a sizer sees

Peak Design’s expanded size is 2 in over the 9 in line. Bellroy gives a 30 to 38 L range and no expanded dimensions we could find.

Compression straps cannot change a published size. Whether they cut depth depends on how much your contents compress; that is our reasoning, not a measured result.

Peak Design lists a 30 L compressed mode but no compressed dimensions, so we cannot say what depth it reaches. A buyer says the top straps came off when loaded, so plan around the larger figure.

Travel backpack litres vs real capacity

Two makers can both print 40 L and mean different things. We multiplied each published height, width and depth to get a bounding-box volume, in litres, and compared it with the rating.

Source: nomad-labs calculation from manufacturer-published dimensions, 25 Oct 2026. A box ignores rounded corners and fabric give, so it is a ceiling for a rigid shape only.

The pages do not say how each maker counts pockets and stretch, so 40 L from one brand may not equal 40 L from another.

Our advice: compare boxes and weights, and use litres only inside one brand’s range.

At a 7 kg limit the packs here leave 4.95 to 6.24 kg for contents, so the last litres of a big pack are unlikely to fill by weight (our reading of the payload table).

Clamshell or top-loader, hip belt and torso fit

A clamshell opens like a suitcase, so you see everything at once and cubes sit flat in layers; a top-loader opens at the top, and you dig for the bottom. The Aer TP3 is a lay-flat clamshell and the Bellroy a suitcase-style full zip.

With a 16 in laptop and cubes, take a clamshell. If you spend more days on trails than in terminals, take a top-loader. That is our editorial view, not a measured result.

Torso length decides comfort more than litres do. Osprey’s fit guidance says “Not every customer will fit every pack”. The Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 share a 55 x 35 x 23 cm box and differ in harness shape.

Our rule of thumb, not a maker figure: above about 8 kg and a few kilometres of walking, buy a real belt. Below that, tuck-away straps and fast gate checks matter more, which is the Allpa’s argument.

Does your laptop fit the travel backpack sleeve

Sleeve ratings are in screen inches, but a laptop occupies a footprint in centimetres; the numbers below are Apple’s. Pick a sleeve rated at or above your screen size, then check the footprint where the maker prints one.

Source: nomad-labs calculation from manufacturer-published empty weights, 25 Oct 2026. Payload = limit minus empty weight.

Where your airline prints 7 kg (Emirates, Qantas International economy), choose on empty weight first: the lightest and heaviest packs differ by 1.29 kg, nearly a fifth of the allowance (our calculation).

At 8 kg (Lufthansa) or 10 kg (Ryanair paid, Wizz Air) the table leaves 5.95 to 9.24 kg, so in our reading the gauge is more likely to decide the pack than the scale.

Packing cubes and one-bag travel steps

One-bag travel means a single carry-on pack for the whole trip. Cubes organise clothes, and they can add bulk to a bag whose depth is the limit. That is our reasoning; no maker or airline publishes a cube test.

  1. Weigh the empty pack

Use the payload table above; every other step works against that number.

  2. Weigh the heavy items first

A 16 in MacBook Pro is 2.14 kg, a 13 in MacBook Air 1.23 kg. Decide on the laptop before the wardrobe.

  3. Put the heavy items against your back

The load then rides close to your spine.

  4. Fill the middle with clothes

Roll, cube or fold, whichever keeps depth at or under the gauge.

  5. Put liquids and electronics at the top

Liquids go in a quart-size bag (TSA rule below), and the laptop sits where you can pull it out.

  6. Measure and weigh the packed bag

Run the home test below before you leave, not at the gate.

These six steps are our own packing order. Only the weights, the airline limits and the TSA liquids rule come from a source.

How to measure your travel backpack against a gauge at home

Measure it full, the way you will fly. An empty pack always passes.

  1. Make a frame

Tape a cardboard box at 22 x 14 x 9 in for the US, your airline’s own limits, or 55 x 35 x 20 cm if you fly mixed airlines.

  2. Fill every pocket

American and United count handles and wheels, and Southwest counts attachments.

  3. Push the pack in

If it will not go in without forcing, assume an agent’s sizer will stop it too.

  4. Weigh it

Weigh yourself holding the pack, then alone, and subtract. Compare the result with your airline’s number.

No airline publishes a home test, so this one is ours.

If an agent still sends your bag to the hold, ask about gate check. Delta tags it free with a pink tag, and Frontier gate checks a carry-on at no charge if bins are full.

On American Eagle regional flights with limited bin space, carry-ons larger than the personal-item size are valeted (handed over at the aircraft door), and American asks you to remove batteries first.

Anti-theft features and airport security for travel backpacks

Lockable zippers are common: Cabin Zero (lock sold separately), Farpoint, Fairview, Allpa and Aer list them, and Away has a magnetic locking zipper. A lock stops an easy open on a crowded train but not a razor.

The Pacsafe is the one pack here built for that case, with its slashguard mesh, a Dyneema strap and the Roobar Deluxe lock. At 1.51 kg it is 0.75 kg heavier than the Cabin Zero.

If a bag goes missing, your cover matters more than your zipper. Our comparison of how three nomad insurers handle claims covers what to check.

At the checkpoint, TSA’s laptop page, updated 15 July 2026, says to take the laptop out of the bag into a separate bin unless you are in PreCheck. Its liquids rule allows containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less in a quart-size bag.

Power banks must travel in the cabin, not in checked bags, per TSA’s power bank page updated 14 May 2025.

Travel backpack warranty and repair terms

These are headline terms from product pages. We opened full terms only for Aer; Peak Design’s comes from a site banner, Tortuga’s terms were not opened and Cabin Zero’s lifetime warranty is listed on its page with the terms not opened.

Travel backpack for digital nomads: laptop weight against an 8 kg limit

A worked case: a 16 in MacBook Pro, flying Delta, then Lufthansa, then Ryanair. Delta’s depth line is 9 in, and Lufthansa allows 8 kg.

The Tortuga clears all three on size (on Ryanair’s paid bag, not its free item). Then 8 kg minus its 2.00 kg minus the 2.14 kg laptop leaves 3.86 kg for everything else. The Farpoint’s 9.1 in depth is 0.1 in over Delta’s line.

Take a pack near 1.5 kg (a hypothetical, not a listed pack). With the 16 in MacBook Pro it leaves 8 – 1.5 – 2.14 = 4.36 kg for everything else.

A 14 in MacBook Pro (1.55 kg) leaves 4.95 kg, about 0.6 kg more (our calculation). Choose the lighter pack and the smaller laptop before you add anything else.

Our guide to fitting a laptop and chargers inside 7 kg covers the gear list; use this page’s empty weights. The remote work setup guide covers the laptop choices that decide pack size.

Compare portable wifi, eSIM and local SIM before you pack a hotspot. For months in Europe on budget flights, the Schengen 90/180 rule sets how long you can stay.

Mistakes that cost you

Watch out

Buying on litres misleads: the 44 L Cabin Zero has a 33.0 L box, and the Allpa’s 35 L has a 42.0 L one.

Measure the pack full. An empty pack always passes, and airlines see it packed.

None printed is not unlimited. American, Delta, United and Southwest print no weight limit on the pages we read, and that is all those pages tell you.

A basic fare may not include an overhead bag. United says you can usually bring only one personal item in Basic Economy, and Frontier sells its overhead bag as an add-on.

Regional jets are tighter. Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer allow personal items only.

A maker’s airline-fit claim needs your airline’s width beside it; Cabin Zero’s page still lists Spirit.

How we picked these travel backpacks and where the numbers come from

We did not carry or test any pack. We compared published specs from each maker’s product page and the airline, TSA, IATA and Apple pages, all opened on 25 October 2026. Durability is spec-level only: fabric, denier, water resistance and stated warranty.

We chose these ten by editorial judgment from packs that retail roundups and forum threads keep returning to, across three price tiers plus one personal-item pairing. That is a shortlist, not a test of every pack, so read the picks as best of these ten on published size.

We also considered Patagonia’s Black Hole MLC 45L, the Nomatic Travel Pack, Tom Bihn, Matador and Salkan, but did not open their maker pages, so they are not here.

Derived values are labelled “our calculation”. The universal size is the smallest value per axis across the overhead column of the 11 airlines. Box litres are height times width times depth, divided by 1,000 in cm or by 61.0237 in cubic inches.

The bars are editor’s ratings, not test results. Gauge fit scores 100 for a pack at or under 22 x 14 x 9 in on every axis and 80 for a pack whose own page gives conflicting depth figures (the Aer).

It scores 60 for one axis over by 0.2 in or less, 40 for over by up to 1 in, 20 for over by more than 1 in in any published mode, and 10 for several axes far over.

For the Away the first bar scores the under-seat size: 100 if it fits both American’s and United’s limits, 60 if it fits one.

Weight is 100 minus 40 times the empty kilograms above 0.5. Carry system is 20 where the page states no hip belt, 40 for a sold-separately belt and 60 for an included one, plus 20 for an adjustable harness, tuck-away straps or a zip-away back panel.

A silent page scores low, which does not prove the feature is missing.

Gaps we could not close: Tortuga’s and Cabin Zero’s warranty terms, hip-belt status on five pages, easyJet’s large-bag weight, the true Transporter 44 size, the Aer Travel Pack 4 specs, a sourced guide to litres by trip length, steps for measuring your torso, and cleaning or re-proofing care.

Travel backpack questions

Is a travel backpack a carry-on or a personal item?

It depends on size. A 40 L pack such as the Tortuga Pro 40L (55 x 35 x 20 cm) is an overhead carry-on. A 20 L pack such as the Away Everywhere Zip suits under the seat, where American’s limit is 18 x 14 x 8 in.

What size travel backpack fits most airlines?

Across the overhead limits of 11 airlines, the smallest value per axis is 55 cm high, 35 cm wide and 20 cm deep (our calculation). Of the ten cards in this guide, the Tortuga Pro 40L matches it and the Pacsafe EXP35 is within 0.1 cm. American, Delta and United alone use 22 x 14 x 9 in.

Does a carry-on backpack have a weight limit?

Often. Emirates economy prints 7 kg, Lufthansa 8 kg, Ryanair’s paid bag 10 kg and Frontier 35 lb. The American, Delta, United and Southwest pages we read print no weight limit, so check your fare rules before you pack to the edge.

How much can you pack in a 7 kg carry-on backpack?

After the empty pack, the packs here leave between 4.95 kg and 6.24 kg for everything, laptop included: 6.24 kg with the Cabin Zero Classic 44L and 4.95 kg with the Peak Design 45L. A 16 in MacBook Pro alone weighs 2.14 kg.

Do budget airlines accept a 40 L travel backpack for free?

Mostly no. Ryanair’s free item is 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and its 55 x 40 x 20 cm bag needs Priority and 2 Cabin Bags. easyJet’s 56 x 45 x 25 cm bag is paid, Wizz Air needs WIZZ Priority, and Frontier sells its overhead bag.

What happened to Spirit Airlines’ carry-on limit?

Spirit ceased all operations on 2 May 2026, per NPR and PBS, so its old limit no longer applies. Frontier’s free under-seat size is 18 x 14 x 8 in, with a 35 lb weight limit. Guides that still treat Spirit as flying are out of date.

Can you carry a laptop and power bank through security in a travel backpack?

Yes. TSA says laptops come out of the bag into a separate bin unless you have PreCheck, per a page updated 15 July 2026. Power banks must go in carry-on bags, never checked ones. Liquids need containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less.

Are expandable travel backpacks allowed as carry-on?

Only if the size a gauge sees fits. The Peak Design 45L lists 22 x 13 x 9.5 in standard and 22 x 13 x 11 in expanded, against a 9 in depth line at American, Delta and United. Plan around the expanded figure.
