The partnership started by Samsung and AMD in June 2019, for the inclusion of the Radeon core in chipsets for mobile devices, is about to deliver its first fruits.
Samsung confirmed at the Exynos On 2021 event, dedicated to the presentation of the new Exynos 2100 chipset, the preparation of a “next generation mobile GPU” made in collaboration with AMD.
Unfortunately, except for the use of the phrase “in the next flagship product”, the announcement made by Inyup Kang – President of System LSI Business at Samsung, did not include specific details. We can only assume that the top of the range referred to by the official Samsung is Galaxy Note 21, but it could just as well be about the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Eventually, both will be revealed during the same launch event.
Under the agreement signed between the two giants, AMD will license to Samsung customized solutions for graphics acceleration, based on the Radeon-DNA GPU (RDNA) architecture, for use in mobile devices and other products that complement AMD’s product offering. Thus, while Samsung benefits from one of the best graphics acceleration solutions on the market, AMD gains direct access to the smartphone market and a constant source of revenue, generated by every Samsung device that incorporates RDNA technologies.
The performance of the Exynos 2100 chipset on the CPU side is already at a very competitive level. Aided with GPUs developed in conjunction with AMD, the Samsung Exynos family of chipsets could quickly erode Qualcomm’s position as a preferred supplier of chipsets for high-end phones.
